FURTHER DEVELOPMENT

AFTER RE-VISITING MY BRIEF I BECAME AWARE OF THE 30m BUILDING LENGTH LIMITATION THAT I HAD NOT NOTED EARLIER. THIS MEANT I NEEDED TO CONDENSE MY BUILDING AND MAKE 2LEVELS BECOME 3. IN DIFFERENT COLOURS I DREW UP A LAYOUT PLAN OF HOW THEY WOULD WORK TOGETHER.

I THEN DESIGNED THE INTERIOR OF THE BUILDING AND SOLVED ALL THREE LEVELS, SHOWN IN THE ABOVE SCHEME DESIGNS.

THIS STAGE ALSO INVOLED CALCULATING LEVEL CHANGES AND STAIR DEVELOPMENT.

ORIGINAL THOUGHTS WERE OF A DNA DOUBLE HELIX INSPIRATION

I WANTED TO USE THIS CONCEPT AND HAVE A BUILDIND THAT WRAPPED AROUND ITSELF BOTH VERTICALLY IN LEVEL CHANGES AND LINELALLY(EAST TO WEST) IN PLAN

SITE DESCRIPTION

THE SETTING FOR THE FEELING DERIVED FROM THIS PAINTING WOULD BE BEST SUITED ON A ROCKY CLIFF OVER LOOKING THE OCEAN. A PERFECT AREA FOR THIS WOULD BE THE LOWER EAST COAST OF SPAIN. A SECLUDED BLOCK OF LAND LIKE THE ONE PICTURED IS WHERE I'D IMAGIN THE DEVELOPMENT TO BE BUILT.

PAINTING AND NARRATIVE

"ROOMS BY THE SEA" - 1951

BRIGHTNESS, FLOATING, PEAFEFUL, SOLITUDE, COLOUR, LIGHT

SOME INQUIRY INTO THIS PAINTING HAS TAUGHT ME THAT HOPPER ACTUALLY DESIGNED AND BUILT A STUDIO FOR HIMSELF WHICH IS WHERE THIS ABOVE VIEW IS DEVELOPED FROM. THE SCENE THOUGH HOWEVER HAD MEANING BEHIND IT.

Titled in his record book "Rooms by the Sea. Alias The Jumping Off Place," Hopper noted that the second title was perceived by some to have "malign overtones" and he thus deleted it. While the view from the studio suggested the composition of Rooms by the Sea, the image is more an evocative metaphor of silence and solitude than the transcription of an actual scene.1

THIS MADE ME REALISE MY ORIGINAL THOUGHT OF THE SCENE TO CREAT A FEELING OF SOLITUDE WAS SPOT ON. THE EMOTIONS I GET FROM THE PAINTING IS THAT ONE WOULD BE TRYING TO ESCAPE, THROUGH THE DOOR OUT INTO THE OPEN SEA NEVER TO BE SEEN AGAIN, WHERE IN REALITY THE STUDIO DIDNT JUST DROP STRAIGHT OFF INTO THE SEA. THIS IS ALSO ONE OF VERY FEW OF EDWARD HOPPER PAINTINGS THAT DOES NOT INCLUDE A FIGURE AND MAKES AN OBVIOUS STATEMENT THAT THERE IS AN EMPTYNESS WITHIN HIS LIFE. THE PAINTER IS LOOKING FOR AN ESCAPE THAT IS NOT REALLY THERE. THIS LED ME TO DEVELOP THE NARRATIVE;

"A MISSLEADING ESCAPE FOR A MISLED MIND"

PARTI

AFTER DEVELOPING THROUGH MY PARTI DIAGRAMS I SEEMED TO NOT BE ABLE TO FIND A SOLID PARTI IN THE PLANS OF THIS BUILDING. WITH FURTHER INVESTIGATION INTO THE FRONT ELEVATION OF VENTURI'S MOTHER'S HOUSE I STARTED TO SEE MORE PATTERNS FORMING, FINALLY ON PARTI DIAGRAM E, I THINK SEEMS TO BE THE MOST LIKELY POSSIBLE PARTI FOR THIS PROJECT
